A passion for the local

The classic operation at Junkön is all part of a coastal fishing tradition which unites the marine communities of Piteå, Kalix, Luleå and Haparanda. You could say that fishing here is sustainable by nature, since hundreds of years of small-scale precision have built the environmental responsibility needed to keep the ocean and its populations alive for many generations to come. Junköfiskarna only takes as much as the sea can handle, sell locally – or by order. Most of the operations are efficient without wasting energy or resources, it is a craft and manual labor which at the end of the day contributes to the Swedish cuisine in the form of sustainable northern food.

And a sense of the future

With the legacy follows a responsibility for the future, to keep re-assessing whether things can be done in ways that are even better for the ocean, for the climate – and for people. Maybe we’ll eventually convert our fishing vessels to electric and support all production with power from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

We are also focused on making use of everything we harvest from the sea and minimize all waste. This is why we have set up a collaboration with the chef Fredrik Hedlund, who has started to produce Bouquerones – a south European herring tradition which helps us us all fish for food, also the males.
